I think theirs a difference between what recommended hp and what insurance companies and even some T org allow on a boat,in particular those under 20 ft. I like the allisons, and with a 2.0 t0 2.5 engine cant imagine anything faster, their 3.0 warning is actually about handling problems incurred. But in it being so, its so for a reason, thus would understand why an insurance company or organization refuses to let it participate unless at own risk such as in a speed record attempt. Putting a 3 liter on one and in a crowd wouldnt be a good idea if operator lacked experience. And while the 20 ft boats might be somewhat exempt by federal law, those under it arnt,an 18 ft boat with a 225 hanging off it isnt within the specified hp limit. That said many use the old original block ,make changes make additional hp with same cover on it and get by,as legally by title a 150 hp or whatever, even though if discovered it might be a dq for alterations. It would take a protest from someone to even have anyone examine it,what then would make it nonlegal I have an aftermarket lower unit -so not stock.,horn, tuner?Be a hard line to draw. I checked with my insurance company they will go above that rating at 25 dollars per 25 hp jump as its over 20 ft,so nothing is written in stone. My 22 ft Jaguar has a 235 plate rating, and they will insure me with a 250 hp on it.I even eyed a 300 rude, but lord that thing is a monster.
