There is a "let's go for a cruise, homework" article that some how I send it to the general forum and not the safety forum.

On the day of the planned cruise, the captain should get up early and check the weather both on TV and from the boat's VHF. If weather is iffy it might be a good idea to postpone the trip. Very important is to fill out a "float plan"
and leave it with someone on shore that can contact the proper authority in case you don't came back when suppose to. Run a quick check of all gear. make sure you got life vests for everyone, boat is gassed up, food, drinks, charts, safety equipment and first aid kit all in order and head for the dock. At dock survey the water and find channel, so you can get to it safely, and start your trip. If homework was done, cruise should be straight forward and without problem, keep an eye out for landmarks as you go. Its also a good idea to turn on your depth finder the minute you leave the dock and keep an eye on it, slowing down if there is a steady upward trend.
Now pack your lunch plan your trip and go have some fun.
