I was reading a book recently and it had an interesting story regarding the beginning years of the Rapalas. Apparently two Americans discovered the lure on a trip to Finland and wanted to bring them back stateside since they worked so well. Word spread quickly about this incredible lure and there was a mass shortage of Rapalas back in the 50's. The lures were manufactured by hand and they had to come from overseas and the company importing them could not get financing to order a mass amount. This created a huge demand and there is one account of a local tackle shop renting Rapalas by the day. You had to put down a hefty deposit to rent the lure.

Anyone have first hand experience from the days of the Rapala craze? Its hard to imagine a lure shortage today with BPS and the internet.
