Unhitched stolen boat can't foil police chase

<!-- begin /production/story/credit_line_format.comp -->The occupants of a pickup truck eluding police Tuesday tried to use a 32-foot boat to knock officers off their trail, Miami-Dade police said Tuesday.
The incident started about 11:30 a.m. with an alleged traffic infraction at Southwest 134th Avenue and 184th Street, said Detective Javier Baez, a Miami-Dade police spokesman. Three officers pulled over two men inside a green Chevy pickup pulling a 2005 Contender boat.
Once the pickup stopped, one of the men jumped out and started to unhitch the boat, police said. The driver lurched forward, as if trying to release the boat and have it hit the marked police car, police said.
Once the boat was unhooked, the passenger jumped back into the pickup, which sped away. According to the arrest affidavit, the truck raced through a residential neighborhood, running red lights and barreling through wooden fences.
Police caught up with the truck in a Burger King parking lot in the 11400 block of Quail Roost Drive. But only one person was inside the truck. The passenger had run away.
The driver, Humberto Serrano, was charged with reckless driving, leaving the scene of an accident and two counts of aggravated assault on a police officer. Police were still looking for the passenger.
The boat Serrano left behind was reported stolen Dec. 11. Serrano told officers that a man at a supermarket offered him $500 to take it from ``Point A to Point B.''
