The late Alon White relayed this story to me while attending the Rally@Watts Bar in Tennessee.
Alon and a friend, Larry, were fishing out of Alons Triton on Kentucky Lake. The fish were biting pretty good as a low pressure was approaching and rain was coming. It wasn't long and the rain drops began to fall. Soooo... Alon and Larry did what most of us would do - put on rain gear.
Well... only a few minutes had passed and Alon felt something biting him on the inside of his thigh inside of his rain suit. Putting his rod down quickly he grabbed the varmit with both hands in an effort to keep it from bitting him again. At the same time he hollered to Larry - "THERE'S A RAT IN MY RAIN SUIT!"
Larry hearing the fear in Alon's voice and seeing it on his face quickly cranked his bait in and moved to the front of the boat to assist Alon with his dilima. Because Alon had a death grip on the rat, and he wasn't about to turn loose of it, he could not simply remove the rain gear. After a very brief discussion it was decided that Larry would take a knife and cut the rather expensive rain gear around Alons hands. This would allow Alon to maintain his grip on the rat and be protected from it by the rain suit at the same time. Good plan huh?
Larry proceeded to pull out is pocket knife and carefully cut the suit. It was almost like sugery, according to Alon, because Larry had to exercise great care, in a rocking boat, not to cut Alons hands nor his legs. T'was not an easy task. Eventually Larry was able to make the required cuts. Without even looking to see what it was and probably with a touch of fear and a touch of anger Alon heaved the varmit over the side. Alon said he was a bit surprised when he saw a pieced of his high dollar rain suit go one way and.... a crank bait go the other.
