Strange fishing techniques

The strangest fishing technique I’ve heard came from a fishing guide when out for stripers. When the fish would come up from 60ft depth to 18 – 20ft, (I forget what time of year that was), he would hook a shiner about 20” away from a 3/4oz egg sinker, lower into the water to the desired depth, (18’ in this case), blow up a balloon and tie it over the fishing line. Drop the balloon and (because stripers spook easily, he said) use the trolling motor to move about 150ft away. Simply just wait for strange movement from the balloon and reel in. The balloon tends to set the hook and when the balloon reaches your pole just continue to reel the line through the balloon knot.
