I just took myself below a personal cut-off point. All these years, where spinning rods were concerned, I've never felt the need to go below a Medium power rating for any reason. I'm a finesse freak, it's always been a fun alternative to the "norm" that I like to play with. So many are using Medium Light powered rods now that I figured I'd give it a try.

So, I bought a St Croix Avid 6'9" ML/XF rod. I justified this with the idea that if I don't like it for bass use, it will make a decent panfish rod. To me, this power rating really puts the "sissy" in Sissy stick.

I fished the river late last fall with a friend I've not seen in several years. He is a die-hard river rat with a sweet RiverPro jet boat. He put me into some late season phenomenal smallie action that day and he was using a ML power rod. More than a few times he pulled in good sized fish, barely, and I stress barely, hooked by the skin of their lips. Seeing this, I knew without doubt that those fish would have likely been lost to a heavier powered rod. So, this became my reason to give one a try.

Crap....now I need another spinning reel too ;)
