Bankhead Lake is the most northern project on the Black Warrior-Tombigbee river system. These clear waters stretch for 65 miles and cover 9,200 surface acres. This includes the Locust and Mulberry forks to the head of navigation. Development on the lake is either privately owned or commercial. There are several marinas, and fish camps along the lake that provide boat docking and storage, fueling facilities, boat repairs, launching ramps, food and supplies.

This is the second largest lake on the Warrior River. It sits 15 miles west of Birmingham and 30 miles northeast of Tuscaloosa. Bankhead Reservoir flows through Walker, Jefferson and Tuscaloosa Counties.
The primary uses for this reservoir are navigation, hydroelectric generation, flood control, and recreation. There is extensive development on the shorelines, and includes private residences and commercial marinas. Camping, boating and fishing provide the main recreational opportunities on this reservoir.

Alabama Power Company impounded Bankhead Reservoir in 1915. Bankhead is most known for catches of Largemouth Bass and Spotted Bass. Largemouth bass up to 16 inches are abundant with lower numbers of larger bass. Trophy potential exists in backwater areas. The spotted bass have modest numbers of 8 - 13 inch fish but lower numbers of larger fish. Better opportunities for anglers to catch spotted bass are found in loaer sections of the lake. They have excellent numbers of large crappie. And they have plenty of Hybrid Bass. The hybrids usually range from 3 to 8 lbs. Although, the former world and current state record hybrid, ( 25.15 lb ), was caught in the headwaters in 1996.
