I'm gonna report on my trip to Bay Springs for my South East thread this week. Reason being is I finally was able to make the trip and was very impressed with what I came up with.
This is one of the most imprssive lakes I've ever been on. Plenty of creeks channels coming into the main lake. Plenty of cover fishing, and plenty of areas of grass beds. Now the water was down when I was there yesterday, but if the water had been to the usual level, there would have been numerous kinds of cover to fish. They have grass beds that were out of the water but are within casting distance of deep water. Stumps up and down each side that were out of the water. Looked as if the water was about 5 ft. down from the usual.
This lake is long and wide. They had a bass tournament going on while we were there. We didn't even find the large part of the lake until late yesterday evening. We put in at one of the boat ramps in the backwater and fished there for most of the day. We were actually surprised when we finally went up to the main channel and came around the bend to the main lake. We were shocked because of the size of the body of water.
It has plenty of campgrounds and also has a few cabins. Now there are plenty of homes on both sides and several marinas. We're talking large marinas that house dozens of very large yachts. Yep yachts. I passed one that looked like two double decker busses put together. So there is probably a good bit of traffic during the summer months on this water, but no worries. It connects to the Johnson-Tombigbee Waterway. Most of the large boats go up or down the river from there.
But now the best thing I found yesterday was the variety of fish you can catch in this lake. Believe it or not, I caught two 1 1/2 lb Norther Pike while fishing. I was blown away. Knew what they looked like, but have never had the oppurtunity to fish for them. Now don't ask me how they got there, because that's something I can't explain. All I can tell you is they had to follow the rivers to get there. There's no mistaking these fine fish. I took a pic of them with my cell phone, but unfortunately, they didn't take. Now this lake is famous for Largemouth Bass, Smallies, Bream, Crappie, Catfish, Sauger, and now thanks to your's truly, Northern Pike.
This has got to be one of the best lakes in the Southeast hands down. I don't get the oppurtunity to fish around the other states like I'd like to, but there's no doubt in my mind that this lake can hold it's own with any of them. I talked to a fellow this weekend that has pulled a 10 1/2 lb largemouth out and his partner pulled a 13 lb, 14 oz bass out . He told me that he figures the next state record will come from that very lake.
I know this isn't my usual kind of thread, but I hope you have enjoyed reading this. I was totally shocked, and I think you will be too. Plan a trip to Bay Springs Lake sometime soon, and I truly believe you'll find exactly what you set out for.
