I've never thought about fishing, or should I say Bass Fishing in the state of Virginia. Just doesn't ring a bell to me as far as Bass Fishing goes. So I pulled some information on it just to see what they had to offer. Boy, was I wrong!

Briery Creek Lake is one of Virginia's greatest additions to the bass fishing entusiast. Mind you, this lake is only 845 acres, but is known to produce some of the largest bass in the state. This lake has been at or near the top for "citation" largemouth bass each year. An amazing 24 of the 25 heaviest largemouth bass from public waterbodies have come from Briery Creek Lake since 1993. And, 16 of the 25 heaviest largemouth since 1970 came from this lake. That's amazing! Not bad for a lake that was built in 1986.

This is a survey conducted in 1999, and through the spring of 2000.

Fishing pressure is highest in March, April and May.
About 70% of Briery Creek Lake anglers fish for largemouth bass and most (82%) fish there in hopes of catching a trophy fish.
Catch rates for largemouth bass were highest in the summer but the success on trophy largemouth bass is highest in the spring.
On average, a trophy largemouth bass is caught for every 115 hours of fishing effort in the spring. This estimate goes up slightly in the rest of the year.
About 70% of the trophy largemouth bass caught in 1999 was in the spring.
About 29% of the trophy largemouth bass caught were harvested.
Anglers from across Virginia fish at Briery Creek Lake. Additionally, anglers from at least 15 states come to fish Briery Creek Lake each year.
Fishing at Briery Creek Lake is economically important to the local community
Now I'm not the world's best bass fishing critic, but I will say that this is a lake is worth checking out. They boast on their catch and release program, and that's an added bonus. Everyone should practice this way of fishing. It's the only way to insure that the younger generations will have something to enjoy as we have. I hope you have enjoyed reading this article as much as I enjoyed bringing it to you.
