Since I consider offshore fishing to be a real weakness of mine I read just about every article on electronics that I can find. If there is one thing that the experts seem to be divided 50/50 on its whether to run the unit in auto or manual mode.

Years ago almost everyone agree that it was better to run units in manual mode to get the most out of them. As units have gotten better some claim that so have the auto modes. Another benefit is that you have more time to fish rather than be fussing with your settings constantly.

On the other side are guys like Ike and Timmy Horton. Just the other day I read Ike make the statement that it was a big mistake that a lot of anglers make running them in auto. Now what he meant specifically was using the fish ID mode. With the fish ID setting on the unit shows many things like bait and weeds as game fish. In this case to me it really makes sense to run the unit with fish ID off. Now Timmy on the other hand uses the manual settings for just about everything. Range, zoom, contrast, scroll speed and sensitivity all in manual mode. Maybe its just me as a weekend angler with cheaper units but to me constantly messing with all this all the time seems like a waste of time. Maybe its just me though, how do you all set up your units?
