The dug out log was the first canoe. Easy to make, strong, and durable. (lot of chopping is required, lol)
400 year old cypress log canoes have been dug out of Florida's mud in near perfect shape. Problem is they weight to much. And there is why native Americans turned to wood frames covered with birch bark or animal skins, or bundles of Thule reeds. With no trailers on those days weight was a key factor, and this light weight canoes were still pretty durable and strong.
It was in the 1800's the first canvas- covered wood frame canoes came along. Around 1950, modern materials including aluminum, fiberglass, and composite plastic have taken over the market. Modern canoes come in a variety of designs some made for all- around recreational use, others for long distance voyages while heavily loaded, and others for taking on the twists and turns of white water in boiling mountain rivers.
