Stern light

My stern light went out on me a little while ago. I had the connection checked and I'm still getting power.I found that the ground wire came apart from a connecter. I couldn't get to the rest of the wire so I just ran a new wire from the outlet and attatched it to the inside wall of the battery compartment.It still won't work. Since my boat's aluminum, would that make a difference?Any ideas?
