Need help with my clear coat

My clear coat has flaked off the top edges of my boat. From the console forward. I was wondering about spraying it with cans of clear coat.

What should I use?

How should I prep the area?

How do I know if the gel coat is still good?

I will post pics of my boat in the am, when I get home from work.

I was in the auto parts store & found 3 different cans of clear. What to use?

Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated,
