From a 5 gallon bucket.

Drill approx 8 1 inch holes in botton and several holes going half way up on the sides, take handle off, drill 1 inch hole on each side where old handle was, need a piece of 3/8 line, 4ft , find middle of this line, tie any old type of loop, slip one end through old handle hole, slip a good size washer over line tie a knot , repeat other side, but make sure you pull this line through hole to even up the loop to approx center of bucket slip your washer on tie knot, if frayed ends on line burn them to seal ,you are good to go.

**Note** If you use it enough, the edges of the hole will cut the line, even with a washer. The washer keeps the knot from pulling through the hole, but the edges of the hole will cut the line in time.

To solve this, you can either come up with a bunch of ways to put some type of bushing or material in the hole, or just periodically look at the line and tie a new knot. Good reason to make the original line a few feet longer that you otherwise might.

Whatever you do, don't just use the original handle. While they work for carrying the buckets when full of paint, oil, or etc, the design was meant to be disposable and the flexing of use as a drag device will pull the handles straight and then out.
